Heritage River Nomination

The Greater Kakwa, a local citizens group is developing a nomination to have the Kakwa declared a Heritage River.

What is the Canadian Heritage River Program

The Canadian Heritage Rivers System is Canada's national river conservation program that promotes, protects and enhances Canada's river heritage, and ensures that Canada's leading rivers are managed in a sustainable manner.

The Heritage River Program is a public trust initiated by local citizens and supported by provincial and federal governments. All groups come together to form a partnership on river conservation. The Canadian Heritage Rivers Program is administered by a board comprised of members from each province and territories.

The Heritage River Program has no legal authority and participation is voluntary.  The program is driven by a spirit of trust and good will.  CHRS estimates that the Heritage Rivers in Canada generate an annual benefit of some 32 million dollars.
